Emma, right now

Lately, this is you:
1. You have taken a liking to wearing your pink and green sunglasses. Inside the house, outside the house. While you're eating, while you're watching Sesame Street. If you see your sunglasses, you want to be wearing them. Your dad and I love that you finally keep them on when we're outside in the blazing sun, and we laugh when we see you wearing them in the house.

2. You have started pointing to random objects throughout the house each day, saying in a sing-song voice, "Da-da! Da-da!" It started with you pointing out your dad's underwear in a clean pile of laundry, then you pointed to his polo shirts hanging to dry in the doorway. You point at pictures of him and say his name. You pointed at a travel coffee mug yesterday and said it. It really is the cutest thing and it's obvious you love him.

3. You still love hugging Bailey. You walk up to her all the time and flop yourself down on top of her. Bailey lets you crawl all over her and you put your head on her back and pat her gently (most of the time). You've also swung a leg over her back and sat on her like you're riding a horse. You bounced up and down when you did that too. I don't think Bailey was as fond of that as she is of your other snuggles, but she endured it.

4. You love red grapes. We cut them in half for you and you eat them all up.
5. We've had the chance to spend time with family outside a lot this summer. You've been in several lakes/rivers and despite our prediction that you would not like the cold water around your feet, you've had so much fun with it! In fact, when we lifted you out of the river in Morton, you were really, really mad that your water playtime was over. You cried really hard for about five minutes. You also like the little swimming pool we got for you, though we need to get a few more toys to entertain you with because splashing gets old to you rather quickly.

6. You're starting to try to run places. You're steps are very stiff and your running is sort of jilted ... and I worry you're going to get ahead of yourself, get going too fast and face plant. I don't mind if you're on the grass, but when you're running down the driveway, it's unnerving. You've already face-planted once on that driveway, when you were trying to swing your leg over your little car to sit down.

7. You still have fun going through our cabinets. You open my cabinet in the bathroom and pull out two green bottles -- one of them is my mousse and the other is the wave spray I use when I scrunch my hair. You carry the two bottles around like they're a pair.

8. We had our first official trip to the library in mid-June. "Official" meaning that we went there for you to peruse all the books and pick a few to check out. We've made other trips there for story time and for me to pick up books I've had on hold, but this was YOUR trip. You love to pull books off the shelf in your bedroom and sometimes spend more than 30 minutes at a time looking at all of your books. If there are books around, I know you're occupied. At the library, there is a pretty good-sized children's section and we just sat right down there and spent time looking at everything. You're so deliberate in how you select your books. You poke at a particular spine, daintily pull it out enough to see the cover, and if you like it, you pull it all the way out and set it on the ground to flip the pages for a minute. If you decide you don't care for it, you either leave it pulled halfway out or you push it partway back. Your dad and I do love that you seem to really enjoy your books. We checked out two books for you: "Emma in Charge" and "With a Dog Like..."
9. You're really developing a strong will and have been performing some very intense little tantrums. For some reason you do not want to have your diaper changed and you thrash around, kicking your legs and turning your head from side to side really quickly. Or if you're holding my cell phone (for example) and I take it away from you, that also makes you really mad and you do a little angry dance. Your dad and I knew these fits would come but now that they're here, it's hard for us to 1) not giggle at how cute you are when you're mad and 2) really figure out the best way to address your feelings and let you know it's okay to feel upset while also teaching you that that tantrum behavior is not acceptable.
10. You're really into all kinds of balls. You point out anything that looks spherical like a ball and say in this adorable sing-song voice that starts up high and then swings lower, "Bah!" You even pointed to a ballerina's round bun in one of your books and said, "Bah." You just learned how to throw and you have a unique pitch. You hold the ball in the palm of your hand, with your palm facing upward. You bend your arm at the elbow up toward your face and then unleash it quickly. It's sort of an underhand but it comes from up above, not a swing from down low. We know your Papa will really love this picture of you with a soccer ball.

For now, that's a little snapshot of who you are, right this very moment. We love you, Nemma-Noo.

Cute idea! You could turn this into a blurb book later and gift it to her when she's older. Have you gotten that girl a swing yet?

I love the way you wrote this blog. It's not to us, your fond readers, but to your sweet little girl. I love it! If you see something similar in our blog, thank you for the brilliant idea, I hope you don't mind sharing this way of blogging.
